“We chose July 20th because of its special significance. It’s the day Colombians commemorate Independence day.” said Castillo Plaza Colombia is a first of its kind in South Florida and abroad.
Plaza Colombia will include artistic components as well as rest areas, memorial walls, and lush landscaping, all celebrating Colombian American heritage.
“Strengthening cultural understanding and recognizing Colombian American heritage is something that is long due for Colombian Americans in South Florida. I’m excited about this project and I look forward to its completion later this year.” said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe A. Martinez.
“I’m confident Plaza Colombia will bring pride and joy to Colombian Americans and to all who visit La Plaza, for generations to come” said Chairman Castillo.
Colombian Americans are South Florida's second-largest Hispanic group and Colombia is Miami Dade County’s third largest trading partner.
Last year its trade with South Florida surpassed $5.5 billion.
The Colombian American Coalition is a non-for-profit 501-C-3 organization established in Miami-Dade County since 1996. The Coalition is charged with fostering initiatives designed to strengthen the Colombian American Community through civic-engagement, advocacy and cultural programs.
